This series of conferences, set-up in 2017, provides a platform for physical and, since 2021, virtual meeting, sharing, exchanges, studies, discussion, networking and publication on diverse issues in contemporary world through a phenomenon widely recognised : THE RISE OF ASIA. It encourages the participation of scholars from a wide range of scientific disciplines (area studies, cultural studies, ecology, economics, geography, history, humanities, languages, management, political and social sciences…) and practitioners from diverse professional fields (business, civil society, education, enterprise, government, management, parliament, public policy, social and solidarity movements…), as well as artists, writers, journalists, based in diverse geographical areas (Africa, North and South America, Australia, Asia, Europe, Pacific…). Bandung, Belgrade and Havana Conferences are the most brilliant stars of the Bandung Constellation. Bandung was the “big bang” generating conferences, associations, institutions, research centres, scientific disciplines, festivals… related to Africa and Asia. Belgrade transcended the geographical basis (Asia and Africa) of Bandung to a set of principles devoid of geographical limits. Thanks to Belgrade, Bandung became universal. Belgrade also revealed the two “wings” of Non-alignment : the “radical” one who wanted to put into priority the eradication of colonialism, imperialism and neo-colonialism ; and the “moderate” one who preferred to focus their effort to maintain peace. The radical wing of Non-Alignment found the opportunity to manifest for the first time in Havana. While the moderate wing developed into regular summits of Non-Alignment to the present day.

La France a été très concernée par la Conférence de Bandung car cette réunion afro-asiatique devait discuter des problèmes et des intérêts communs en Afrique et en Asie dans les domaines économiques, sociaux et culturels, mais aussi en matière de souveraineté nationale, de colonialisme et de racisme. Et cette réunion était organisée sans impliquer les puissances coloniales, dont la France. Cependant, à la veille de la Conférence, la France a été impliquée dans deux problèmes coloniaux épineux. L’un est l’Afrique du Nord dont les entités territoriales (Algérie, Maroc, Tunisie) se sont engagées ensemble dans des mouvements de libération nationale contre l’occupation coloniale française.

THE RISE OF ASIA CONFERENCE 2020 took place in Paris (Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne) on February 12, 2020, and in Le Havre (Université Le Havre Normandie) on February 13-14, 2020. The exact title of the conference was “THE RISE OF ASIA IN GLOBAL HISTORY AND PERSPECTIVE : 65 years after Bandung : What rupture and what continuity in Global Order ?” The conference was initiated and coordinated by Darwis Khudori, and was co-hosted by CHAC (Centre d’Histoire de l’Asie Contemporaine), Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne and GRIC (Groupe de Recherches Identités et Cultures), Université Le Havre Normandie. Around 70 papers were presented and discussed in plenary and parallel sessions of the conference. The parallel sessions were organised in the following clusters : AFRICA (1 session) ; ART & LITERATURE (1 session) ; ASIA (5 sessions) ; BANDUNG-RELATED ISSUES (1 session) ; CENTRAL-EASTERN EUROPE AND RUSSIA (1 session) ; CHINA-RELATED ISSUES (1 session) ; DIGITAL DEVELOPMENT (2 sessions) ; ECOBRICK WORKSHOP (2 sessions) ; ECOLOGY & URBAN ISSUES (2 sessions) ; FRENCH SESSION (3 sessions) ; GENDER & WOMEN ISSUES (3 sessions) ; INTER-UNIVERSITY NETWORKING (1 session) ; RELIGIOUS ISSUES (2 sessions).
